Logistics has always been a critical success factor in e-commerce, but the pressure to innovate has rarely been as intense as it is today. Automation, robotics, and space efficiency are at the top of the agenda because the challenges are clear: space is becoming more expensive, labor is in shorter supply, and customer expectations are constantly rising. Current developments from across Europe show how market leaders are preparing for the future. For over 15 years, Comsysto Reply has been implementing complex e-commerce solutions for clients across all industries. At the same time, we track and analyze relevant trends in our E-Commerce Lab to ensure we are ready for tomorrow's challenges today. We share our insights here—every Tuesday!
Otrium leads the way: 400% more efficiency in the same space
The Dutch fashion retailer Otrium has made a statement with its new automated warehouse, the "O-Mega Robot," in Almelo. The facility is considered one of the most densely packed in the world, with 400% higher space efficiency (Ecommerce News) compared to traditional systems. This is made possible by a highly automated warehouse architecture that combines robotics with intelligent storage logic.
The motivations are clear: high rents in metropolitan areas, increasing pressure on delivery times, and rising demands on return processes are forcing retailers to maximize the efficiency of their existing space. This specific example is currently among the top 1% of the most densely packed warehouses worldwide!
OTTO & Boston Dynamics: When Stretch and Spot take over the work
The OTTO Group is also investing strategically in robotics technology. A recent example: the "Stretch" robot from Boston Dynamics will be used at several logistics sites in the future to unload trucks (press release). This is complemented by inspection robots like "Spot," which patrol warehouses autonomously to perform safety checks. It is an exciting glimpse into the future that is already a reality today—and one that helps mitigate the shortage of skilled workers, at least in part.
If you want to get an impression of how these robots are used, this video from Arvato offers a demonstration worth watching.
And the robot dog, which has long been popular on the internet, also shows what it can do in this video from the manufacturer.
Innovation is also coming from Germany: Exotec automates order picking
The system from shows what scalable intralogistics from Germany can look like. Exotec. The approach: autonomous robots bring any SKU from the high-bay warehouse directly to the packing station within two minutes (E-Commerce Magazine). The time savings and space efficiency are enormous, making the system particularly attractive for retailers focused on fast delivery times.
An explanatory video from Exotec shows the system in action and makes it clear where the future of modern warehouse logistics is headed.
Why all of this is so important right now
Rental prices for warehouse space are rising (Logistik Heute) – especially in regions that are critical for same-day delivery. Customer expectations here are constantly increasing, as I explained in more detail a few weeks ago . At the same time, marketplaces like Amazon, Kaufland or Zalando have become an indispensable part of the e-commerce ecosystem (cf. newsletter edition), and competition there is also intensifying. Anyone wanting to rank highly must meet strict service level agreements (E-Commerce Germany) requirements: fast delivery, seamless return processes, and reliable support. All of this is hardly economically viable anymore without automation.
Optimizing logistics is becoming a prerequisite for visibility—and therefore for conversion. In other words: if you don't invest today, you won't just lose margin tomorrow, you'll lose access to your customers.
That’s it for today—and here’s what’s next
Whether it’s stretch robots, high-bay warehouses, or AI-supported processes: the future of e-commerce logistics is automated—and it starts now. To deliver efficiently, you have to do more than just save space; you have to rethink entire processes. The good news: there are already proven solutions and bold pioneers you can look to for guidance.
And if there really is a consolidation of storefronts—as described in last week’s newsletter—logistics may well become the decisive competitive factor in the coming years. It’s worth staying tuned!
See you next week!
