In March, TikTok shopping officially launched in Germany! After some delays, Fulfilment By TikTok (FBT) has finally introduced its services here. It is high time we took a closer look at social commerce in this context. For over 15 years, Comsysto Reply has been implementing complex e-commerce solutions for clients across all industries. At the same time, we track and analyze relevant trends in our e-commerce lab to ensure we are ready for tomorrow's challenges today. We share our insights here every Tuesday!

This introduction of FBT is part of TikTok's strategic expansion to strengthen its e-commerce presence internationally. The current focus is on major European markets such as Germany, France, and Italy (Ecommerce News). ByteDance, the company behind TikTok, is positioning itself internationally as a strong competitor to industry giants like Amazon and Alibaba.com . While these companies currently dominate the market, ByteDance is growing significantly faster than any other competitor in terms of "activity revenue" (ECDB definition) (ECDB) – which is definitely bringing an exciting dynamic to the industry.

What does social commerce actually mean?

The decisive advantage of social commerce (Shopify definition) lies in integrating the shopping experience directly into the social media app, which significantly increases the conversion rate from potential leads to actual buyers. This seamless connection between product discovery and checkout definitely has the potential to accelerate or even enable the purchasing process – and, of course, has a direct impact on sales figures.

These developments make it clear that social commerce is by no means a fleeting trend, but is fundamentally and permanently changing the way we shop online. Companies that seize this opportunity and position themselves as pioneers early on can start benefiting today! There are various levels of implementation – from simply using social media as a sales channel via a corporate account to genuine commission-based influencer marketing.

Why do social media play such a decisive role in the future growth of e-commerce?

Younger target groups, the buyers of the future, spend an average of almost three hours a day on social media platforms. Even among 30- to 40-year-olds, this time spent is over two hours a day (soax). This intensive usage opens up enormous opportunities in marketing, especially in the area of content marketing. Through engaging, informative, and above all entertaining content—the only kind that truly goes viral—products and brands can be brought closer to potential buyers. More on this is described, for example, in this article in the e-commerce magazine. Potentially, social commerce is therefore the sales channel of the future.

Also important: with social media, personalization and thus an effective recommendation system are "built in," so to speak. Showing tailored content to every user is ultimately the core business of every social media platform. And this form of personalization also increases the likelihood of purchases, as users are shown exactly what matches their interests. And, of course, social commerce also opens up a very valuable feedback channel. Both effects lead to a stronger bond between customer and brand and support sustainable revenue growth.

When content featuring a specific product is particularly well-received or even imitated, it also leads to "social proof," a psychological effect (Wikipedia) that also explains why customers in the e-commerce environment often place a disproportionately high value on recommendations from other customers. And it gets even better: there are not only corporate accounts and influencers, but also real contacts in social networks. And these real contacts also like content or even explicitly share it. In that case, the psychological effect of the recommendation, which is ultimately positive for the merchant, is even more pronounced.

That’s it for today - and here’s what’s next

So much for the theory. To optimize your social commerce strategy in practice, Shopify, for example, offers valuable tips for maximizing conversion rates on various social media platforms. Average conversion rates per platform are highlighted as an important benchmarking tool for measuring and increasing success.

Next week, however, we will first dive deeper into the possibilities of artificial intelligence for the smartest possible product search and introduce a solution that we have implemented in our e-commerce lab.

See you next week!
