Consumer sentiment remains challenging in 2025

Hopes for a recovery in consumer confidence were not met in August either. According to the Nuremberg Institute for Market Decisions, consumer sentiment has fallen for the third consecutive month – an effect that researchers attribute directly to inflation, a weak economy, and consumer restraint (NIM).

The portal onlinemarktplatz.de even headlines: "No recovery in sight" (onlinemarktplatz.de). While the ifo Business Climate Index shows slight improvements in corporate sentiment (ifo), the situation remains tense for consumers – with direct consequences for retail.

German marketplaces are expanding

Major German players are focusing on international growth. For instance, MediaMarkt is rolling out its marketplace to Switzerland and Hungary from (E-commerce news), while Kaufland follows up with a launch in France (e-commerce news).

But not every international expansion goes well: OTTO is withdrawing from the Netherlands, after the platform failed to achieve the desired performance there (e-commerce news).

Overall, there is still a lot of movement in the market, and naturally, everyone is fighting for the limited consumer budgets in the various markets.

MediaMarkt and Saturn are being acquired by Chinese interests

A real bombshell in German retail: Ceconomy, the parent company of MediaMarkt and Saturn, is being acquired by the Chinese group JD.com taken over. While Ceconomy benefits from a tax refund in the short term (Heise), the political debate is intense: experts like Martin Fassnacht anticipate not only job cuts in the medium term, but also the disappearance of the Saturn brand (tagesschau).

The merger of Zalando and AboutYou is officially through

After months of speculation, it is now a done deal: Zalando and AboutYou are joining forces (Zalando IR). Back on the K5 stage, CEOs David Schröder and Tarek Müller discussed their shared vision: the clear goal is to make Zalando the ecosystem in Europe, combining their respective strengths—logistics for Zalando and software for AboutYou—and making them available to third parties as well.

Current figures show that this move is falling on fertile ground: 3 million new customers were acquired by Zalando in recent months (E-commerce news).

Shopify reports strong financial results

There is also a lot of movement internationally: Shopify reported strong revenue growthover the summer, even though profit forecasts were slightly missed. The stock still rose significantly – a signal of how stable Shopify has become in the global competitive landscape (investing.com).
